It’s a front-row lock-out for the sprint, but will Mercedes again go backwards off the line?
George Russell admitted that Mercedes has only made “baby steps” progress in addressing one of their few issues in their dominant season.
Despite their struggles with starts off the line this year, Russell managed to secure pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix sprint, narrowly beating his teammate Kimi Antonelli in qualifying.
Russell acknowledged the challenge of maintaining position at the start, especially against the Ferraris and McLarens, but expressed optimism about the team’s progress in this area.
With Antonelli leading the championship and Russell aiming for a strong performance, the pole position marked a significant achievement for the British driver.
Russell praised the upgrades on the Mercedes W17, noting the improvements in performance compared to previous races and emphasizing the team’s efforts in pushing the car forward.
His satisfaction with the car’s performance and securing pole position reflected a positive start to the weekend for both Russell and the Mercedes team.
